PAN Parks Wilderness area of Paanajärvi represents a pristine unfragmented example of large boreal forest close to the Arctic Circle. Untouched boreal forests are homeland not only for Brown bears, lynx and the wolf, but also for the very rare wild reindeer. Scale of wilderness in this park is astonishing - boreal forests with lakes reaching into far horizons with no sign of human presence, no roads nor towns: a great example of pristine, untouched and remote wilderness.

History

The Paanajärvi area has been the meeting point of two cultures for along time. This was where the traditions of West and East mixed. Here, the culture of the White-Sea Karelians, later Russian and Finnish cultures met peacefully. Paanajärvi was established as a national park in 1992.
